2026 Where to Go in Australia This November | An Early-Summer Events and Festivals Guide for International Students
November is when Australia tips into early summer. The Melbourne Cup Carnival has just wrapped up, Sydney's jacarandas are dropping their last purple petals, Christmas lights and night markets are switching on in every capital, and beach season is officially open. If you have just finished exams, or just landed on a student visa from Latin America, South Africa, Europe or anywhere else, this is the easiest month of the year to get out and see the country. This guide covers Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane and the Gold Coast, Perth, Adelaide, Hobart and Canberra. Every date was checked against the organiser's or state government's 2026 page; where 2026 dates are not yet published, we say so rather than guess. All prices are in Australian dollars (AUD).

November weather, what to wear and sun safety
Think late spring in the northern hemisphere, but drier and with a far stronger sun. The southern capitals (Melbourne, Hobart, Canberra) can swing more than 10 degrees between midday and evening, so a T-shirt at lunch and a light jacket at dinner is normal. These are the Bureau of Meteorology's long-term November averages:
| City | Nov average max / min | Rainfall |
|---|---|---|
| Sydney | 24.1°C / 16.0°C | 85 mm |
| Melbourne | 22.1°C / 10.4°C | 61 mm |
| Brisbane | 26.8°C / 17.9°C | 98 mm |
| Perth | 26.7°C / 14.3°C | 26 mm |
| Adelaide | 25.2°C / 14.0°C | 30 mm |
| Hobart | 18.9°C / 9.9°C | 48 mm |
| Canberra | 23.3°C / 9.5°C | 69 mm |
Pack a light layer that fits in a backpack, plus a windproof jacket for Melbourne and Hobart. Sun protection is the non-negotiable part. Cancer Council Australia's rule is to protect your skin whenever the UV Index is 3 or above, and in November the midday UV in every capital sits between "high" and "extreme", peaking from about 10 am to 4 pm. Follow the five steps: Slip on covering clothing, Slop on SPF50+ water-resistant sunscreen (20 minutes before going out, reapplied every two hours), Slap on a wide-brimmed hat, Seek shade and Slide on sunglasses that meet the Australian standard. National Skin Cancer Action Week 2026 runs 15–22 November. Even if you come from a hot country, Australian UV is stronger than most people expect because of the clear, dry air and the thinner ozone layer over the southern hemisphere; a cloudy day can still burn you.
Public holiday note: Tuesday 3 November (Melbourne Cup Day) is a holiday in Victoria only. Everywhere else is a normal working day, and 11 November (Remembrance Day) is not a public holiday anywhere.
Melbourne
Spring racing after the Cup
The Melbourne Cup Carnival at Flemington fills the first week of November: Melbourne Cup Day on Tuesday 3 November (Victorian public holiday), Crown Oaks Day on Thursday 5 November (general admission AUD 50) and TAB Champions Stakes Day on Saturday 7 November (AUD 65). Stakes Day is the most relaxed and the easiest to get tickets for; many international students dress up once to experience the fascinator culture. If you would rather not pay, Federation Square screens the races.
Queen Victoria Market in November
The market's November program is packed: Coffee Weekend on 7–8 November (AUD 40–45), a free Diwali market on 14 November, the free Cachivaches Latin market on 21–22 November, and the Christmas Night Market every Wednesday from 25 November to 16 December, 5 pm to 10 pm, free entry. Latin American students in particular should mark the Cachivaches weekend.
City of Melbourne Christmas season
The City of Melbourne switches on its Christmas tree on 27 November, and Christmas Square plus the city decorations run from 27 November to 25 December, all free. The Myer Christmas Windows on Bourke Street traditionally open in early November; for 2026 Myer's website only says "Coming Soon", so check there for the date.
Strawberry picking on the Mornington Peninsula
Pick-your-own farms around Main Ridge (for example Rocky Creek Strawberry Farm, formerly Sunny Ridge) usually open from November to April, about 1.5 hours' drive from the city, and pair well with the Arthurs Seat Eagle. Confirm 2026 opening dates and prices on the farm's website.
Sydney
Sculpture by the Sea: the final days
The Bondi to Tamarama coastal exhibition runs 16 October to 2 November 2026, with about 100 sculptures along a two-kilometre clifftop walk, free. You have only the first two days of November to catch it. One common mix-up: Vivid Sydney, the light festival, is held in May and June, not November.
Last of the jacarandas
Sydney's jacarandas flower in October and November, and the first half of the month usually still has colour. Classic spots are McDougall Street in Kirribilli, First Fleet Park at Circular Quay and the University of Sydney campus. McDougall Street is residential, so keep driveways clear when you take photos.
The Finders Keepers design market
Australia's best-known independent designer market holds its Sydney spring/summer edition on 13–15 November 2026 at Carriageworks in Eveleigh, AUD 7 a day. It is a good place to buy Christmas gifts to post home.
Martin Place Christmas tree
The City of Sydney's Martin Place tree is on display from Thursday 26 November 2026 to 5 January 2027, with a free light show nightly from 8 pm to midnight. In previous years the Martin Place Christmas markets have opened the weekend after the lighting.
Inner West street festivals
Newtown Festival and the Glebe Street Fair are usually held on Sundays in mid-November with free entry, but as at 5 November 2026 neither organiser had published 2026 dates. Check newtownfestival.org and the Glebe Chamber of Commerce.
Brisbane and the Gold Coast
Melt Festival, final week
Brisbane's citywide queer arts festival Melt runs 21 October to 8 November 2026, produced by Brisbane Powerhouse, with a mix of ticketed shows and free events.
Schoolies Week, 21–27 November: plan around it
The Queensland Government has confirmed Gold Coast Schoolies Week for 21–27 November 2026. It is the end-of-school party week for Australian Year 12 leavers: accommodation in Surfers Paradise gets expensive, part of the beach becomes the wristband-only Schoolies Hub, and the nights are crowded and heavily policed. If you want the Gold Coast that week, stay in Burleigh Heads or Coolangatta instead, or go another week.
Christmas lights and beach season
Brisbane's King George Square Christmas tree is traditionally lit in late November (28 November in 2025), free; the 2026 date had not been published as at 5 November 2026, so check Brisbane City Council's events page. The Gold Coast Mayor's Christmas Carols at HOTA are usually held in late November or early December, with the lawn area free. November is also the start of proper beach weather in Queensland: Streets Beach at South Bank is free, and New Farm Park's jacarandas are still finishing in early November. Midday UV in Queensland is often "extreme", so reapply sunscreen before and after swimming.
Perth
PrideFEST: Fairday and the Pride Parade
Pride WA has announced the two big 2026 PrideFEST events: Fairday on Sunday 8 November, moving to Wellington Square (Moort-ak Waadiny), and the Pride Parade on Saturday 28 November through Northbridge, followed by a free City of Perth after-party in Russell Square.
City of Perth Multicultural Festival
Held on 14–15 November 2026 at Elizabeth Quay, 5 pm to 9 pm, with food stalls and performances from Perth's many communities. It is an easy way to find your own community's food and events in the city.
Christmas Lights Trail
The Lotterywest-supported Christmas Lights Trail through the Perth CBD switches on from 27 November 2026 and runs to 27 December. Walking the trail is free.
Kings Park and the beaches
Kings Park is free and open daily, hosts the Remembrance Day service on 11 November and several outdoor concerts through the month. Cottesloe and Scarborough are swimmable by November, but the strong afternoon sea breeze (the "Fremantle Doctor") makes mornings the better choice.
Adelaide
National Pharmacies Christmas Pageant
South Australia's famous Christmas parade is on Saturday 14 November 2026. Floats cross the CBD and Father Christmas finishes at Beehive Corner on Rundle Mall. Watching from the street does not cost anything (check the organiser's page), and locals claim kerb-side spots early in the morning.
Feast Festival and the Adelaide Italian Festival
Adelaide's queer arts festival Feast runs 1–22 November 2026 under the theme "JOY", with a free-events filter on its website. Over the same dates, 1–22 November, the Adelaide Italian Festival celebrates its 50th year with long-table lunches and community events.
Strawberry picking in Hahndorf
Beerenberg Farm in Hahndorf, about 30 minutes from the city, opens its pick-your-own strawberry patch from November to April: AUD 8 entry (children 12 and under free) plus AUD 15 per kilogram picked. Combine it with the German-heritage main street of Hahndorf.
Hobart
Point to Pinnacle
Billed as the world's toughest half marathon, Point to Pinnacle is on Sunday 15 November 2026, climbing 1,271 metres over 21.1 km from Wrest Point to the summit of kunanyi/Mount Wellington. Entry is AUD 120 (late entry AUD 145). Even if you are only cheering, bring warm clothes: the summit can still be single digits in November.
Myer City of Hobart Christmas Pageant
The City of Hobart's Christmas pageant is on Saturday 21 November 2026, 10.30 am to 12 pm in the Hobart CBD, free.
Salamanca Market and the Tasmanian Craft Fair
Salamanca Market runs every Saturday from 8.30 am to 3 pm with free entry, and from November the Christmas craft stalls multiply. The Tasmanian Craft Fair in Deloraine, about 2.5 hours' drive north, runs 30 October to 1 November 2026 (ticketed; see the organiser for prices).
Canberra
SpringOUT Pride Festival
Canberra's SpringOUT runs from 31 October to 30 November 2026, opening with Fair Day at Glebe Park and offering free and low-cost events all month.
Handmade Market Canberra
One of Australia's largest handmade markets is on 27–29 November 2026 (Friday 5 pm to 9 pm, Saturday and Sunday 10 am to 4 pm) at Exhibition Park in Canberra (EPIC). Entry is free, with a donation encouraged.
Floriade is over
Floriade 2026 ran 12 September to 11 October and the Canberra Nara Candle Festival was on 24 October, so neither is on in November. On 11 November the Australian War Memorial holds its Remembrance Day service, free to attend.

How students save money
- Build the month around free events. Tree lightings, night markets, pageants, Pride parades and design markets cost nothing or AUD 7; pick one paid "big" event (racing, Point to Pinnacle) at most.
- Carry your student ID. Markets, museums and shows usually have a student price, and your Australian institution's card is normally accepted.
- Eat dinner at the market. A plate at the QVM night market or the Perth Multicultural Festival is typically AUD 12–20, cheaper than a restaurant and a chance to find food from home.
- Book the Gold Coast outside Schoolies Week. The same room can cost double for 21–27 November compared with the weeks either side.
- Fly midweek for interstate trips. November is before the Australian school holidays, so Tuesday and Wednesday fares are cheapest; carry-on only avoids baggage fees.
- Share a hire car. The Mornington Peninsula, Hahndorf and Deloraine are awkward by public transport; three or four people splitting a car is the cheapest way. Rules on using an overseas licence differ by state and by whether your licence is in English, so check the state transport authority before you book.
Getting around
- Melbourne (myki): all Victorian public transport is half price from 1 June 2026 to 1 January 2027, so the full-fare daily cap drops from AUD 11.40 to AUD 5.70 (weekend and public holiday caps are halved too); just tap on as usual and the discount is applied automatically. On race days take the train straight to Flemington Racecourse station.
- Sydney (Opal): an Opal card or a tapped bank card has daily and weekly caps; check current amounts on transportnsw.info. Carriageworks is a five-minute walk from Redfern station.
- Queensland (go card or tap-on): Queensland has legislated permanent AUD 0.50 flat fares on all Translink buses, trains, ferries and trams (the Airtrain airport line excluded). Brisbane to the Gold Coast costs 50 cents, the cheapest intercity trip in the country.
- Perth (SmartRider): buses and trains inside the CBD Free Transit Zone are free, and Elizabeth Quay and Northbridge are inside it.
- Adelaide (metroCARD), Hobart (Metro Tas), Canberra (MyWay+): expect CBD road closures on pageant days, so leave early; Hahndorf buses are infrequent, and extra shuttles run to EPIC during the Handmade Market.
Student concessions vary by state. In Victoria, full-time undergraduate international students can apply through their institution for the International Student Travel Pass (formerly iUSEpass), which halves the price of a myki pass. New South Wales generally does not offer concessions to international students, and in Queensland the 50-cent fare applies to everyone.
FAQ
Is 3 November a day off if I study in Sydney or Brisbane?
No. Melbourne Cup Day is a public holiday in Victoria only. Other states work and study as normal, although many workplaces stop for the race at 3 pm Melbourne time.
Is Vivid Sydney in November?
No. Vivid Sydney is held every year in May and June. Sydney's November light display is the Martin Place Christmas tree from 26 November and the Pitt Street Mall canopy of lights.
Can international students join Schoolies?
The Schoolies Hub is open only to registered Queensland Year 12 leavers wearing a Safer Schoolies wristband, so other students cannot enter. That week Surfers Paradise is expensive and crowded at night; go another week or stay further south in Burleigh Heads.
Is the sea warm enough in November?
Brisbane, the Gold Coast and Perth are in full beach mode; Sydney and Adelaide are fine in the afternoon but cool early and late; Melbourne and Hobart water is still cold. Wherever you are, swim only between the red and yellow flags and keep sunscreen on in the water.
Can dates change?
Yes. Every date here was checked against the organiser's or state government's 2026 announcement, but weather and organiser decisions can shift things. Re-check the official page the day before you go.
